A souvenier from Zwolle
Zwolle is a small city in the province of Overijssel in the Netherlands. In 1845, Jan van der Kolk started producing Zwolse Balletjes following an old family recipe. The first Zwolse Balletjes where a form of hard candy made from brown sugar. They were a delicacy that was placed in the cheek so it would sweeten the coffee or tea while drinking it. When granulated sugar became available this rite disappeared. The Zwolse Lepeltje is a remnant of this delicate custom combined with the tradition of collecting spoons as souvenirs.
The spoon is made from porcelain and Zwolse Balletje candy. When put in a hot beverage the candy part will melt and sweeten the drink with the original taste of Zwolle. What remains is a small porcelain spoon to collect.
